Guest Speaker

Introducing the 2024 Women’s Club Dinner and Centenary Bowl, with guest speaker Erin Phillips OAM.

Erin is a talented dual-sport athlete, who competed at the highest level of women’s basketball and Australian rules football.

Daughter of Port Adelaide Magpies great, Greg Phillips, Erin wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps however, the lack of professional pathways for female footballers saw her diversify and she started playing basketball at age 13. By age 17, Erin had earned a contract with the Adelaide Lightning where she played from 2002 to 2008. Limited season durations saw her available to nominate for the 2005 WNBA draft where she was taken in the second round at pick 21.

Erin balanced commitments to the Women’s National Basketball League (Australia), Women’s National Basketball Association (USA), EuroLeague Women, Polska PLKK, and Australian representative duties throughout her basketball career.

Her basketball achievements include:

  • 2006 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist
  • 2006 FIBA Women’s World Championship Gold Medallist
  • 2008 Olympic Games Silver Medallist
  • 2008 WNBL Champion (Adelaide Lightning)
  • 2012 WNBA Champion (Indiana Fever)
  • 2014 WNBA Champion (Phoenix Mercury)
  • 2014 FIBA Women’s World Championship Bronze Medallist
  • WNBL All-Star Five (2005, 2006, 2007)
  • EuroLeague Women’s All-Star (2010)
  • Polska PLKK All-Star (2011-2012)

With the inception of the AFLW, Erin was finally able to play professional football. Her football background and years of training with Greg were clearly evident as she won almost every accolade possible in 2017: Adelaide Club Champion, Goal of the Year, AFLW League Best and Fairest, AFLW Players’ Most Valuable Player, AFLW Premiership, AFLW Grand Final Best on Ground, and All-Australian.

In 2022, Erin’s story returned to Port Adelaide when she was named inaugural captain of their women’s team. Erin played out two seasons at Port before retiring at the end of the 2023 season.

Her football achievements include:

  • 3 x AFLW Premiership player (2017, 2019, 2022)
  • 3 x All-Australian (2017, 2019, 2021)
  • 2 x Adelaide Club Champion (2017, 2019)
  • 2x Adelaide leading goalkicker (2018, 2021)
  • 2 x AFLW League Best and Fairest (2017, 2019)
  • 2 x AFLW Players’ Most Valuable Player (2017, 2019)
  • 2 x AFLW Grand Final Best on Ground (2017, 2019)
  • 2019 AFL Coaches Association AFLW Champion Player of the Year
  • 2017 Goal of the Year

Erin was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours for “service to Australian rules football, and to basketball.”
