Guest Speaker

Introducing the 2024 Ackland Horman Trophy and Men’s Club Dinner, with guest speaker Peter Carey OAM.

Peter was a prolific player for SANFL club Glenelg in a career spanning the 18 seasons from 1971 to 1988. He began a centre half forward and was Glenelg’s leading goal kicker in 1973, before moving into the ruck for the remainder of his playing career.

Peter captained Glenelg in the 1983 to 1988 seasons, including Glenelg’s 1985 and 1986 premierships and runner up finishes in 1987 and 1988. Prior to taking on the captaincy, Peter and Glenelg won a premiership and were runner up on five occasions.

His other football achievements include:

  • Inaugural winner of the Fos Williams Medal
  • All-Australian 1979 and 1980
  • Glenelg FC Best and Fairest 1973, 1985 and 1986
  • Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 1989 Australia Day Honours for “service to Australian football”
  • In 2001, inducted as an inaugural member of Glenelg FC’s Hall of Fame
  • In 2002, inducted as an inaugural member of the South Australian Football Hall of Fame
  • In 2009, inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame

To this day, Peter holds the record for the most SANFL games played, having suited up in 448 games.

In recent years, Peter has been Chief Executive of the charity, Youth Opportunities and remains actively involved as an ambassador. The charity has a series of programs for schools, for workforce and group training, and for individuals. Youth Opportunities aim to give young people the opportunity to take control and responsibility of their lives through development of social and emotional capabilities.
