Final

Royal Adelaide 3.5 defeated Blackwood 1.5

Monday 3rd July at Kooyonga Golf Club

Report courtesy of Louise Walters

What a clear and perfect day for winter golf – no rain, no wind,  and a little chilly.

Firstly a big thank you to Kooyonga for hosting today – my understanding from our opponents is that Blackwood would’ve been decidedly muddy and saturated.

Blackwood, after their surprise win against Mount Osmond last week, were worthy opponents with the final scores reflecting a good and tense final.

After nine holes we had four players up and one player down one hole.  Carolyn Astley was the first to finish with a resounding 8/7 win, closely followed by Sandy Hayes winning 5/4 after sinking an amazing 20 metre putt from off the green.  Vicki Thwaites was in a close tussle all day and ended up two down after the 17th.  Jane Bartlett playing at number five was all square after the 18th and proceeded down the 1st again, with three lovely shots on the fairway and put her fourth shot on the green about 5 metres from the hole.  Her opponent pulled her fourth shot into the rough on the high left side of the green, the fifth shot was still in rough, and the sixth down onto the green about 3 metres from the hole.  Jane’s first putt was lovely missing only by inches for a concession, thereby winning the hole and the match – and the final!!  Ali Coventry was one down for most of the day – although was square as the news of Jane’s win came through.

As the Blackwood team manager said,  it was a fitting way to finish the final.

Semi Final

Royal Adelaide 4 defeated Kooyonga 1

Monday 26th June at West Lakes Golf Club

Report courtesy of Louise Walters

A beautiful but chilly start to the day at West Lakes where we teed off just after the A3 team,  West Lakes provided us with coffee and biscuits and brownies before heading off down the par 5 first hole.

Sophie Gosse led the way, never down but never more than one up and finishing up on the 17th about square as the rest of the team were in.

Lou Jacka had a stunning day finishing 6/5 with a fabulous show of sinking some amazing long putts.

Vicki Thwaites had a very steady round coming in 3/2 after the 16th.

The ever reliable Ali Coventry also blitzed the opposition with a 6/5 result and Caroline Astley was 3 up with 3 to play when the others finished.

A very pleasing result played with good company.

We are looking forward to next week for the final against our opponents Blackwood who had a 3–2 win today against the undefeated Mount Osmond.

Round 7

Royal Adelaide 4 defeated West Lakes 1

Monday 19th June at Kooyonga Golf Club

Report courtesy of Louise Walters

It was a late start and an even later finish to our final round of Cleek 1 at Kooyonga yesterday for our match against West Lakes, who were sitting third on the table, with equal points to us, sitting in fourth position.

All matches were quite even over the first nine holes, with the exception of Ali Coventry playing number two, who had a great start (maybe having Mark caddying for her helped?) finishing very early with a 7/5 win.

Next to finish was Jane Bartlett, who played lovely steady golf to finish 6/4, quickly followed by Vicki Thwaites the next hole 5/3.

Both Carolyn Astley and Sandy Hayes were even after 17 holes, with Sandy unfortunately losing on the 18th, and Carolyn, in the last match of the day, and just about under lights won the final match with a lovely third shot onto the green.

This win meant we finished second on the ladder after the host team Kooyonga lost to North Adelaide.  Kooyonga will be our opponents next week – wish us luck!

Round 6

Royal Adelaide 4.5 defeated Flagstaff Hill 0.5

Monday 5th June at Royal Adelaide Golf Club

Report courtesy of Louise Walters

There’s nothing like the confidence of playing on your home course, added to the adrenaline of a much needed win to spur the team to a fabulous result of 4.5 – 0.5 against Flagstaff Hill.

Sophie Gosse playing at Number 5 had a very tight match all day, with the end result of a half on the 18th feeling reflective of the day’s efforts.

Jane Bartlett was the first one home with a stirring 9/8 result after the 10th hole and Lou Jacka playing at number 3 finished after 13 holes with a 6/5 win.

Sandy Hayes played a lovely round to finish 4/3 up and the ever reliable Vicki Thwaites had a 7/6 win as well.

Our position on the ladder is dependent on other teams, and with one round to go, it will be very tight to see if we can make the finals.

Round 5

Match abandoned due to inclement weather

Monday 29th May at Blackwood Golf Club

Report courtesy of Louise Walters

A wet wet day at the office today.

We should’ve realised it was going to be a lost cause while waiting to tee off on the first hole, the green for the 9th was already having large swathes under water.

Still they told us to keep going, all the while the rain getting heavier.

Luckily common sense prevailed and siren went off on about the 5th – 6th hole.

Thank goodness- match abandoned and results halved.

Time for a warm shower and dry out before tomorrow’s stroke round!

Round 4

Royal Adelaide 1 lost to Thaxted Park 4

Monday 22nd May at Thaxted Park Golf Club

Report courtesy of Louise Walters

Playing the host club at their course is never an easy task and this proved so today. Unfortunately our handicaps were significantly different with all our players giving up between 8 and 11 shots over the course of the morning, which just made the going seem that much harder. Whilst some of our players managed a practice round here last week the tricky greens still got the better of most players today.

Susie Osborne was playing in the number 1 position had a slow start to be four down after four holes, and whilst she had some lovely patches in the middle, and a superb birdie 2 on the 15th par 3, Susie finished on the 16th 4/2.

Carolyn Astley had a very steady round, with never more than two or three in it over the round, and unfortunately finished 2/1 down on the 17th.

Toffee Perkins had a very rough day at the office and whilst playing nicely tee to green struggled around the greens to finish down 9/7.

Ali Coventry was our shining light with a tight tussle over the entire round to finish 1 up on the 18th.

Likewise – Judy Willoughby took her playing partner to the 18th, however the score was 1 down.

In conclusion, we lost the round 4 – 1.

Round 3

Royal Adelaide 1.5 lost to Mount Osmond 3.5

Monday 15th May at North Adelaide Golf Club

Report courtesy of Louise Walters

Round 3 at North Adelaide against Mount Osmond started off in cool but beautifully clear conditions as the day developed into one of those superb autumn days that we all dream about playing perfect golf.

Playing at number 5 Lou Jacka had a very even day with never more than 2 each way to finish square on the 18th hole.

Vicki Thwaites, our erstwhile number 4 likewise had a very even match to finish 2 down on the 18th hole.

And the 18th hole was also the venue for Judy Willoughby’s match, with Judy finishing the victor with a score of 1 up.

Unfortunately both Ali Coventry and Caroline Astley met with some blistering form from their Mount Osmond competitors and were both beaten 5/4.

The means the tally was a loss 3.5 – 1.5.
