INFORMAL DINNER TALK: WITH DAVID BLACK

The 100 year anniversary of the Royal title and Dr MacKenzie’s visit

Thursday 20th July
6.30pm arrival with main course served at 7.00pm

At this dinner, David Black, past Captain and author of Seaton Bent, will take members back to the 1920’s and two significant events in the history of the Club.

This year is the 100 year anniversary of the grant of the honour of the use of the Royal title. That honour was granted to the Melbourne and Sydney clubs within four years of their formation, both before the end of the 19th century. In contrast, it took 31 years at Seaton.  The delay has never been explained, but the back story is quite intriguing.

Dr MacKenzie is widely regarded as one the greatest golf architects of all time, arguably the greatest. In 1929, having built four of the greatest holes at Seaton, Royal Adelaide abruptly stopped implementing Dr MacKenzie’s plan. No clear reason was given at the time, nor has any been uncovered since. Again, the back story is intriguing.

Both topics shine a light upon those in charge of the Club at the time and reveal something of their character, but will also give some insight into South Australia at the time.

Guests will be invited to ask questions of David at the end of the night.

The evening will include a set main course and cheese platters to share.

Guests welcome.
